The Robotic Single Site procedure is performed through a 2.5 cm incision that goes directly through the belly button. During surgery, the surgeon sits at a console next to the patient and operates using tiny instruments. A camera gives a high-definition, 3D magnified view inside the patient’s body as every hand movement the surgeon makes is translated by the da Vinci system in real time.
The benefits of robotic single site hysterectomy for the patient include:
- Minimizing scarring and post operative pain
- Shorter hospital stays
- A single or few small incisions compared to an open procedure
While better for the patient, it is technically more difficult for the surgeon to perform. Surgeons must receive specialized training, and already be proficient at performing Robotic hysterectomies.
Not all women may qualify for a robotic hysterectomy. Some factors may limit safety such as:
- Size of uterus
- Patient BMI
- Other complicating factors such as scar tissue, endometriosis, prior surgeries, etc.
